Voice typing and text-to-speech get categorized as "accessibility tools" and, for a lot of people, mentally filed away as "not for me." That undersells them — the accessibility use cases are real and important, but they're far from the only ones.

For someone with a motor impairment that makes typing slow or painful, voice typing isn't a convenience — it's the difference between writing comfortably and not writing at all. For someone with dyslexia or a visual impairment, having text read aloud can make content genuinely accessible that would otherwise take much longer to process, or be inaccessible entirely. These are the use cases these tools were fundamentally built to serve, and they remain the most important ones.
Proofreading by ear
Text-to-speech is a genuinely underused proofreading technique for anyone: hearing your own writing read back exposes awkward phrasing, run-on sentences, and repeated words far more reliably than reading silently, where your brain tends to auto-correct small errors without you noticing. Writers who never think of themselves as needing an "accessibility tool" still benefit from this specific use.
Drafting while your hands are busy
Voice typing turns a commute, a walk, or any hands-busy moment into an opportunity to draft an email, capture a quick idea, or get a first pass of a document down before you're back at a keyboard to refine it. It's not meant to replace careful editing — it's meant to remove the bottleneck of needing to be seated at a keyboard to get words down at all.
